ChatGPT ads become a conversation. The entry point to the brand experience is changing.

On September 16, OpenAI announced a test of Sponsored Agents, which let people who see an ad in ChatGPT Ads start a conversation with the advertiser's AI agent. Rather than ending with an ad click, this creates a path to ask about size, how to use something, or the conditions they want to compare on the spot.

From an ad placement to a touchpoint that helps people decide

The company also presented prompt-based support for ad creation in ChatGPT Work, AI creative capabilities in Ads Manager, and integrations with HubSpot and Shopify. Brands will need to design not only for impressions, but also for what to explain in the conversation and where to hand people off to an external site.

Sponsored Agents, however, is a test for some advertisers in the United States, designed to remain separate from independent ChatGPT responses. Whether people can understand that they are speaking with an advertiser, the scope of answers, and the handling of personal data will shape both usefulness and trust.

Implications for product and UX

This is less an added advertising feature than a shift in experience design for comparison, consultation, and pre-purchase uncertainty. Businesses need to go beyond adding FAQs: they need to design the information customers need to decide, the context that should be handed over, and the moments to connect people to a human—then move toward product operations that can validate those conversations.

Advertising becomes an experience where people choose together with brands.

What excited me most today was the announcement that people will be able to talk directly with a brand's AI agent from a ChatGPT ad.

After seeing an ad, they can immediately ask: What size is it? Does it fit my situation? Should I buy it now? Advertising is becoming an experience where people choose what fits them together with a brand, rather than simply seeing a product.

This is a big shift.

Advertising, product pages, and support used to exist as separate touchpoints. With AI, discovering, comparing, asking, and choosing can become one continuous flow. The product experience can begin at the very first encounter with the brand.

Each person can build the questions they need through conversation and receive the right material to make a decision. Those conversations can also become input for improving products and services. Advertising can become a place where customers and brands create value together.

As these brand conversations become richer experiences within advertising, AI moves beyond simply responding to people and begins to accompany them through the act of choosing. This is how the space where AI can play a meaningful role continues to expand.
