Claude Opus 5.5: Longer Development Tasks at Lower Cost

Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on September 22, improving its ability to handle extended development tasks and the readability of its explanations while lowering the cost of using the AI.

Lowering the Cost of Completing a Task, Beyond the Unit Price

Standard API rates for use through external applications are 20% lower than those for Opus 5. The company says total costs fell by about 40% in comparisons using its typical tasks, including savings from completing work in fewer steps.

Some users outside Japan have praised its development speed, but launch benchmarks and individual impressions alone do not establish that every task will see the same benefits.

Can the Same Budget Buy More Cycles of Testing and Refinement?

Businesses should consider not only the cost of a single response but also the cost and time required to complete a task, including revisions and human review.

Testing this on their own development tasks can show how many more cycles of building a prototype, trying it out, and refining it they can fit into the same budget.

Each Cycle of Testing and Refinement Gets a Little Easier.

What stands out in the announcements of Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol and Luna is that, alongside the performance improvements, the cost of asking AI to do work is coming down.

Beyond getting the right answer in one attempt, we can try things repeatedly. That opens up room to change how development happens.

For example, build two versions of a screen, then try them out and compare them. Differences that were hard to judge from written descriptions become easier to discuss when there is something that works.

And if, after trying it out, you decide, "Actually, let's change things from here"? Copilot for JetBrains now lets you edit an earlier instruction and roll the files back to that point as well.

Asking for another option costs less, and there is a way to restart from partway through. There is less pressure to settle on a prototype in a single attempt.

Compare, choose, and refine again. The easier that cycle becomes, the more of the user experience you can test before the work is finished.

Comparing working options to make decisions becomes an everyday part of development.
