Copilot turns a plain-language request into an internal app

On September 25, Microsoft announced a new structure for its work-focused Copilot. Its Code feature is designed to build small internal apps and dashboards from a description of what someone wants to make.
Make tools, not just documents
A team tracker or a dashboard for exploring numbers could be prototyped in the flow of everyday work, instead of starting with a separate development request. Microsoft also described a managed environment for running these tools safely.
Code is expected to start rolling out to some users in the coming weeks. It is not available to everyone today.
A shorter path from idea to trial
The change is not only that AI can return text. It can build a tool needed for a task and let people try it in real work. Making something small and checking whether it helps becomes more accessible.
Microsoft also announced Autopilot, a proposed agent that keeps working without waiting for each new request. Its private preview is expected to expand at the end of the month; the announcement and actual availability should be kept distinct.

EDITOR'S SIGNALTools shaped around the work itself
What stands out in Microsoft's announcement is that Copilot is moving beyond giving answers toward building small apps people can use at work.
When someone wants to see information more clearly, they may be able to create a screen and try it on the spot.
An idea that once lived in a document becomes a tool people can actually use.
People using a tool could gradually shape it around the way their team works. That is the shift beginning to come into view.
Thinking about how work should happen and building the tool for it are getting closer together.
