On October 1, Google said a prototype satellite carrying chips used for AI computing had reached orbit and made contact with the ground. Built with Planet and launched on a SpaceX rocket, it is the first experiment in a long-term effort to learn whether AI computing infrastructure could work in space.
The satellite carries Google’s AI chips, called TPUs. Over the coming weeks, the team will collect data on how they handle launch stresses, radiation and extreme temperatures. Google has confirmed contact with the satellite and says it is operating as expected. It has not built a large data center in space.
Could computing infrastructure someday operate beyond Earth? Measurements from orbit will help answer that question.
The plan drew discussion on Hacker News before launch, and the orbital test has been discussed on Reddit and in technology news. Views differ on whether the larger vision will work. What is clear is that the project has moved from a proposal to testing real chips in orbit.
The next evidence to watch is how reliably those chips run in space and how heat and radiation affect them. Only with those measurements can Google begin to assess whether more AI computing could move there.
blog.google ↗ ↗What caught my attention in Google’s satellite update was less the grand idea of a data center in space than the fact that it has sent a real chip into orbit.
Put an AI chip on a satellite. Reach orbit. Make contact with the ground. Then measure what heat and radiation do to it.
It is still the beginning of an experiment, but the question has suddenly become concrete.
Instead of only imagining new places for computing, Google can test one of them with actual hardware. The data from this mission will shape the next design.
The places where AI can run are becoming something to test and expand through evidence.
We document the products we build with AI, along with the context, validation, and lessons behind them.

Introducing an AI Agents Bootcamp for Enterprises
Rajat Dandekar announces a bootcamp on building enterprise AI agents. Its curriculum covers RAG, MCP, orchestration, human approvals in ERP workflows, evaluation, deployment, and recovery. Participants are expected to develop a pilot based on an industry problem.
Turning an Android Calculator into an AI Conversation Device
The final installment in a series revisiting the Android-based GHLBD calculator covers its design, a custom calculator app, and uses for its physical keys. The creator then turns to making it a calculator that can converse with AI.
What Changes for Claude Cowork on October 6
The creator interprets a notice about ending tasks on this computer in Claude Cowork. They say the step that turns answers into tasks moves to the cloud on October 6, while local file access remains available, and discuss session and file-handling implications.
A Guide to Using Claude for Video Editing
The creator offers a free Sonnet 5.5 video-editing guide and points viewers to where they can find it. The available description contains promotional links and background about the creator, but gives no specific editing steps or documented results.
Designing Feedback Loops for Claude Code
The creator describes a loop in which a coding agent makes changes, a separate check scores them, and only improvements are retained. They say they tested Karpathy's approach on their own apps, found a weakness, and addressed it with a self-improving loop.
