Mistral Large 4 is available to preview; model weights are due later this month

France's Mistral announced Mistral Large 4 on October 6. It can read images as well as text. Developers can try it through Mistral's service now, while the company plans to release the model weights later this month. Trying a hosted preview and running the model in your own environment are still different stages.
What can people use now?
The public preview is available through Mistral's developer service. It is designed for coding, multistep work, and reading material that includes images. The model has roughly one trillion parameters in total, but uses only the needed portion for each task.
Mistral has also published performance comparisons for finance, law, and security tasks. These are evaluations available at announcement time. Readers can test the preview today, but cannot yet deploy the weights in their own environment.
The next step drawing attention
Mistral plans to release the weights and technical documentation by the end of the month. If that happens, developers will gain more choice over where to run and how to adapt the model. The announcement has drawn discussion in several overseas communities, although the current reactions are mainly to the preview and the planned release.
Today's change is that people can try the new AI. If the planned release arrives, they will also gain another option for deciding how to use it in their own environment.

EDITOR'S SIGNALChoosing AI is becoming a decision about where it runs.
What caught my attention about Mistral Large 4 today is the gap between the day people can try the preview and the day they may run the model themselves.
Those sound similar, but they create different experiences.
First, you try it and see whether it fits the work. Then you decide where and how to run it for your own documents and workflows. The process of choosing AI becomes more concrete.
OpenAI is researching agents that operate specialist software, while Anthropic has expanded access for qualified security professionals. Both are working on connecting model capabilities to actual work.
And Mistral's announcement adds another choice for the AI that supports that work.
As more models become available, products can be designed around the model and deployment setting that suit the task.
AI selection is moving from performance tables to the design of its working environment.
