Anthropic introduced Claude Haiku 5.5 on October 7. The small model is aimed at repeated tasks such as short summaries and customer replies. Anthropic says it costs about 75% less to run on average than Haiku 4.5.
Speed helps when people cannot wait long for an answer: responding to customers, sorting large collections of documents, or finding information while a larger model handles a harder task.
Mixing smaller and larger models by task is becoming practical. Anthropic reports early tests by companies including Asana, although speed and cost will vary by workload.
A Hacker News thread about the release had more than 1,000 points and 480 comments when checked on October 10. Readers discussed pricing and where the model could be useful.
As small models become faster and more affordable, teams can use AI for the many modest tasks that were once too costly or slow to automate.
anthropic.com ↗ ↗What stands out today is how much faster and more affordable Claude's small model has become.
Instead of relying on one large model for everything, teams can hand off searching, sorting and short summaries to a smaller one.
That opens up more ways to use AI.
It could answer frequent customer questions or find the right document before a meeting. Small recurring tasks are exactly where speed makes a difference.
As small models become quicker and cheaper, more of those modest ideas can be put to work and tested in the real world.
AI is moving from one big task to many small steps in everyday work.
